Event takes aim at poverty
The Sault Star - June 23, 2009
By Rylee Irwin
A local event aimed at raising public awareness on the issue of poverty and its effects on health will take place on Thursday. A play, "In My Shoes", will be performed at the event, telling the stories of local patrons, volunteers and staff of the Soup Kitchen Community Centre.
Voices of Action Against Poverty together with the Soup Kitchen Community Centre and the Algoma Community Legal Clinic are hosting the event at the Steelworkers Hall in Sault Ste. Marie.
The play which is written by Jennifer Verquin and directed by Chris Horsepool will be performed by many of the actual people who lived the events being told.
The event which runs from one to four p.m. will include presentations made by Dana Milne, the Income Security Advocacy Centre in Toronto and Tracy Perri form the Algoma Public Health Unit.
On the agenda is the opportunity to discuss with the public, the provincial wide project "Put Food in the Budget".
The project was created in an effort to lobby the provincial government to introduce a Healthy Food Supplement of $100 to all Social Assistance recipients. This would help reduce the negative effects poverty has on health and overall well-being.
